The Migration Series, Panel no. 35: They left the South in great numbers. They arrived in the North in great numbers.

It is atypical of Lawrence to not depict the entire bodies of the migrants, but here he shows them only from the waist-up, focusing on the figures themselves rather than their surrounding environment. Squeezed into the frame, the figures presumably look in the same direction towards their destination. The title of this panel suggests the melancholy involved in leaving one’s home as well as the crowded nature of the migrant’s travels.
